2nd Baby Rescue Centre Needed

PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 10 June 2011 14:11

The current centre now has 30 babies and toddlers in residence, everyone a little miracle of survival.

2 recent admissions were both diagnosed with a form of Cerebral Palsy. This condition is quite common in Sierra Leone where many of the babies born are under weight and therefore more prone to this condition.

Ali was brought to us by 2 VSO nurses working on placement in the Government Hospital in Makini, over, 100 miles away. He was brought to the hospital after being found abandoned in the bush dressed as a ‘devil’. There are many superstitions surrounding babies and children with disabilities and quite often they are abandoned and left to die in the perilous conditions of the African bush.

The second boy who had no name was found locally in a similar situation, he has been called ‘Gods Gift’. Both boys are going really well and are well accepted and integrated with the other toddlers in our care.

Our premises are currently rented and we had to move from our previous location due to difficulties with the landlord. We are currently occupying smaller premises which are not ideal. Unfortunately we cannot take in any further babies due to the lack of spaces and finance; we are already over the limit with what we have. Cynthia Kanu, FHMI’s Head of Ministry Development finds it particularly distressing where relatives and Government Social workers bring along extremely vulnerable babies that we physically cannot accept. It also breaks our hearts to turn them away as we know Jesus loves them so much and we worry whether they will survive. The command of Jesus is heavy on our hearts so  we HAVE to DO something more.  For this we need your help, both individuals and church groups.

We have 2 options; neither is exclusive of the other. One is to seek another building to rent, where we can setup a second Baby Rescue Centre.  This can quickly be done if we had the commitment to the rent and the running costs.

The second option is to build a purpose built unit designed to be expandable as our needs grow. We have already purchased the land for this centre. Although this solution is more long term and also much higher capital costs, we feel that we need to pray that we can get the finance we need to get this centre started as soon as possible as our long term running costs will be less.

Short Term Solution

Rent premises to cater for another 30 babies. These are estimated costs.
Approximate annual rent of  $3000 USD   £1800 GBP
Kit out costs beds, cookware, furniture etc $1000 USD   £600 GBP
Monthly running costs based on current centre  $1600 USD   £970 GBP

A Parallel Solution: A New Permanent Custom Designed Expandable Baby Rescue Centre

Based on the current costs of our new clinic which is under construction, a dedicated Baby Rescue Centre we estimate would cost around $70,000 on the land we already own and cater for over 100 babies.

We need your help!:

  • 7 Sponsors each  pledging $10,000
  • Services of an Architect to design and draw up floor plans for the purpose built Centre

The sights. The sounds. The smells. This was Africa. Not the Africa you would find flipping through a National Geographic magazine with lions, elephants, giraffes and vast sunsets burning in the sky. This Africa was one focused on people and, unfortunately, poverty. Walking off the plane straight onto the jet way, we were all stretching our legs and soaking in everything Africa. After sweating in line at customs and loading our umpteen bags on top of the van we had for the week, we were off to explore the adventures that lay before us.

We arrived in Freetown and stayed there for the first night; however, most of our time was spent in Bo with the Fresh Hope and Heaven’s Garden Baby Rescue Center. David Craig, the founder of Fresh Hope, worked alongside us all week. After settling in our hotel in Bo and enjoying a breakfast of bread and eggs, we were off to explore and experience Bo, Sierra Leone. The marketplace and neighborhood areas alike bustled with motorcycles and kids playing in the street. Children everywhere would run up to us yelling “Poomwe!” which means “white person.” They wanted us to snap them (take their picture) and hold their hands. These children would hold our hands and follow us even though they had no idea where we were headed; they simply wanted to be with us. We enjoyed playing with them and being able to communicate with them for the most part in English.

Ministry on the streetsof Bo | Fresh Hope MinistriesThough we didn’t want to leave the kids, we had work to do. The local pastor, Abenigo, who works with Fresh Hope, was headed to the ma"During the next hour or so, I saw heaven invade earth"rket place for street evangelism. A few of us went with him while the others helped out at Fresh Hope’s orphanage and Heaven’s Garden Baby Rescue Center. The men from New Life Church who joined us on this trip helped our guys fix a well that was broken at the orphanage. In the meantime, Abenigo was bringing revival at the marketplace! For a while, it seemed he was preaching to himself, but then slowly the locals gathered to hear. Many raised their hands after his preaching to receive Christ and be baptized with the Spirit. That’s the point when our team joined in. We split up among the crowd and laid hands on them as the Spirit led and prayed for them. Thinking this was what we came to do, my team and I began to think we accomplished our goal, and we were, therefore, about to leave ... when all of a sudden I heard a commotion in the crowd. I looked over and a woman was lying on the ground slain in the Spirit, and Abenigo was just going after her, motioning with his hands, and praying in Spirit and in truth. During the next hour or so, I saw heaven invade earth. Many more were slain in the Spirit as Abenigo prayed over them. Furthermore, many were healed of physical infirmities right before my eyes. "I saw a blind woman receive sight, a deaf lady receive hearing and demon-possessed people set free". There were many others who would have received healing that day; however, they would not give up their ties with Islam and/or the Secret Society (the name for witchcraft in Sierra Leone). We found this to be one of the main problems in Sierra Leone: multiplicity of religions. Most do not understand that to confess Christ means to renounce all others. Leaving the market place that day, we felt like we were walking straight out of the Gospels. People were bringing their friends to receive healing and many placed their faith in Christ. Though street evangelism was filled with excitement, our adventures had only begun.

Another highlight of this trip would definitely have to be the trek out to the bush villages (jungle). We saw the medical clinic that Fresh Hope started and met the chiefs of these local villages. The trek included some roads, but it also included log crossing, bridge balancing and a tropical rainstorm that poured on us before we could reach the bus. We were able to perform our Kids’ Program at the last village before the rain poured and give the children school supplies and toys; they in turn blessed us with songs glorifying Jesus Christ. They were so precious as they danced and sang to the Lord! At the end of our Kids’ Program that day, an elderly man with gray hair, which is an oddity in Sierra Leone due to the war, gave his life to Christ! He was filled with joy and tried to imitate all the song motions along with us. We were immensely blessed as we watched people who live in what seems the middle of nowhere praise our same God.
"God allow us to see such extraordinary things in a country where He is definitely at work"While there, we also visited the local hospital and the Baby Rescue Center as well as helped with street evangelism. The teamed gladly remained flexible as we filled in whatever roles David Craig had for us. At the end of each day, we met at the Zion Elementary School, also started by Fresh Hope, and enjoyed a freshly cooked meal. Because this school is in the middle of a neighborhood, we also enjoyed the opportunity to play and meet the local neighborhood kids who gathered outside the school and played until we were finished eating. They loved when we sang songs, took their pictures or simply hugged them.
A couple of days before we left, we took the Fresh Hope orphans out to a local river to play for the day. On the way there, these orphans began singing before we even had a chance to introduce ourselves or speak with them. Sitting on top of us and wherever else there was room in the van, we were all squished tight listening to them sing praises to Jesus.
Though many of us missed air conditioning and Mexican food, we all enjoyed our trip and returned not only blessed by the people of Sierra Leone, but also blessed that God would use us and allow us to see such extraordinary things in a country where He is definitely at work.

New Heavens Garden Antenatal Centre

In November this year we will be opening our latest project aimed at reducing the extremely high death rate in both mothers and newborn babies in the remote villages we are aiming to reach with the full gospel of Jesus Christ.Mother and baby | Fresh Hope Ministries
  • 1 in 6 babies don't survive birth
  • 1 in 3.5 under 5's don't survive
  • 1 in 50 mothers die giving birth
  • These are all the highest rates in the world (UN)
Most pregnancy complications in these villages go un-noticed due to their remoteness and can end in unnecessary tragedy.
As part of this pilot extension program we will be employing a nurse to visit these villages regularly recording the progress of each pregancy. Please consider sponsoring a nurse. When their time is right they will be invited, free of charge, to come into Heavens Garden Antenatal Centre where their progress can be closely monitored and transferred to the nearby Government Hospital for specialist delivery or treatment.
Please consider supporting this vital life saving clinic

The grandmother and the orphaned girl triplets
Orphaned tripletsWe have been asked by the Department Welfare if we could take in triplets whos mother died giving birth in the Medicine Sans Frontier Hospital at Godama near Bo. They are all girls, one of which is not thriving. When all 3 are well enough we be taking them in. It has not been possible to find 3 mothers who are already breast feeding who could take on feeding these little girls.
Because the triplets are so young and demanding we need to take on a dedicated day carer. We laso need to take on an additional night carer as our 2 existing night carers are really stretched with 14 babies already in care.
There will also will be a high demand for powdered formula milk for these little ones. This is a very expensive comodity in Sierra Leone.
Prayer ans Support needed
  • Health for the one poorly baby
  • Regular financial support for the 2 carers
  • Finance for the formula milk

Church destroyed by Storm - Rebuilding Process

PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 14 July 2009 15:20

At the end of May 2009 a severe storm swept through the city of Bo, taking one of our church plants with it. There was about 70 in the congregation. Thanks to the response to an Appeal in early June we are happy to tell you that the church is now partially rebuilt.

Click phots to enlargeThe original church was bursting at the seems and we have been wanting to have a larger more waterproof structure for some time although constrained by lack of funds and also the landlord was not sympathetic to a Christian church.

God seems to have had other plans as to how it was all going to happen!

On the night of 25th May 2009 a fierce storm swept the tarpaulin roof, stick structure and bamboo walls away leaving only the concrete base behind.

Soon after our appeal we had responses from Bangor Community Church here in our home town and the Oaks Community Church in North East Derbyshire, England. Together they provided the funds to start rebuilding the church on a new site. Barbara and I extend to you on behalf of Pastor Amos and his congregation their deepest thanks for your love and compassion.

The new site owners have indicated that we can use the site with the view to purchasing the land at some future date when more funds become available.

After the appeal went out It was decided to build the new structure twice the size of the original! By the time of our visit in late June 2009 the church members had already erected a structure and the zinc roof was in place. Although there was no walls yet it acted as good witness going by the number of observers during the service.

The first service held in the new church had 90 people compared to the previous 70! Praise God.

That Sunday we attended we can testify to God's healing mercy to one old lady whose sight was restored. The look of joy on her face told it all. Thank you Jesus.

First Village Borehole Well for £75 or $120!

Our first bore-hole wellClick phots to enlargeSee the VideoFor a long time now we have been missing a large piece of the jigsaw of our heaven sought strategy for reaching the lost with the the fullness of the gospel of Jesus Christ - clean water. Recently we came across two lovely people Steve and Jennifer Lorch who run Hydromissions. They are missionaries so they understand the difficulty of providing wells in the remote African bush where, even if the machinery is available, it is impossible to get it to these far out villages. They came up with a what I believe is a heaven sent design for creating borehole wells by hand with equipment that is affordable, can be carried by hand, can be maintained in-country and above all is a low cost process.

Through Steve and Jen they were able to put us incontact with a local ministry who actually had one of these kits in Sierra Leone. Through Robert and Ruth Search of Living Water International we were able to borrow this kit from Pastor Samuel Menyonger of Hope Universal.

For a total cost of £75 GBP or $120 USD we put in a twenty foot borehole, complete with bucket, pully and concrete platform. This is 1/50th of the cost of getting a hand dug and pump head well installed by a contractor. All the labour was provided by the village itself, even the children were involved!

See it all in this 6 minute video.

Village Women Outreach

David and I would like to thank everyone for their love in praying for us and for your financial support as none of this would happen without you.

In another article, David will be sharing about how we were able to provide a borehole well in one of the remote villages, giving cool, clean, virus and worm free water.

Mum and Baby - survivors
Mum and Baby - survivors
Click phots to enlargeSee the VideoSince God called David and I to Sierra Leone eight years ago my heart has been so broken and troubled by the ratio of these precious women and children dying in childbirth. 1:8 are at lifetime risk of death and in the area we are working in it is even higher, also 1:4 children die under the age of five because of malnutrition, dirty water and poor hygiene.

We cannot change Sierra Leone overnight but over the years we have worked on building relationships with the local people and far out villages by getting to know them, building schools, planting churches and doing health care programmes like de-worming and vitamin programmes.

We have seen many people saved, healed and delivered and Gods light shine in these dark places of Africa and bring hope and salvation to a lost and desperate people. As we sit with these people and listen to their tragic stories of lost loved ones and children, I have held them, cried with them, and prayed with them, but only God can bring peace and heal their broken hearts. As I look around I often think, there, but for the grace of God go I.

Most people in Sierra Leone cannot afford medical care and pregnant women do not see a doctor or midwife throughout their pregnancy. There are traditional birth attendants (TBA's), local women with little or no training, who assist pregnant women for a small fee but most pregnant women don't seek help until they are in labour which is too late to detect complications and the distance to far to get to a hospital. Some women are in labour for days which often ends in a stillborn baby and for the woman a fistula which leaves her incontinent of urine which means she is a total outcast in her family and village, she has no future and no hope without God.

Two weeks ago we visited the fistula ward of the local hospital, there were 56 women there, only four of them had live babies the rest were stillborn, the youngest was 17 years old the oldest 29. We held a service in the ward, I spoke about the woman with the issue of blood touching the hem of Jesus garment and the way to God by the cross, 50 gave their lives to Jesus to who we give God all the glory, who gives these beautiful girls a hope and a future. We also prayed for all of them.

We went back to see them after a couple of days and one of the girls we prayed for who had a fistula, kidney stones and other complications had been in hospital since April was up and about, urinary catheter and IV infusion removed, totally healed, her whole countenance had changed, praise His wonderful name. Some of the girls were limping badly possibly because of nerve damage, God also healed them but the greatest miracle of all is their salvation.

Two midwives came out to Sierra Leone with us for the first time and, as a lot of people are illiterate, put together a wonderful teaching programme in pictures for the TBA's. I taught basic hygiene and hand washing. We also left a birthing pack with each TBA.

We went to three villages in the bush, the farthest about a 7 mile walk (see it on Google Maps) from where we had to leave the 4x4. Cynthia our head of ministry shared the gospel with them and then we went into teaching. Then we prayed with all the people. It was received very well by the villager's and we saw several saved and healed. In Bandawa one of the villages, where we already have a primary school for 65 kids, we saw 5 people with eye problems healed and a 5 year old girl who couldn't speak, spoke for the first time.

On our way to one of the villages we met a girl with very bad conjunctivitis, she was in so much pain, we prayed for her and when we saw her two days later her eyes were much improved, what a privilege to be working with the poor, the orphans and the widows, and to be present when God shows up. God is such an awesome God and I give Him all the Glory and thanks for all that He has done and is going to do.

We are praying that we will be able to start building on our land very soon to bring in more orphans, street girls, offer health education, maternity care and a clean safe place for these women to give birth to live healthy babies.

Please continue to pray for us and for the precious people of Sierra Leone.
