The Remote Village Outreach

Sunday, 10 June 2007 18:37
This was the highlight of the trip for all of us. Cynthia was approached to see if we would be interested in carrying on a work with 3 remote villages, Lawana, Bandawa and Njorpowahun that was started by an amputee pastor who since has passed away. The work has been left in a state of limbo since then. He was also a teacher and had started a primary school in the furthermost village. We felt that it was the heart of Jesus would not want the good work built up so far to be lost and that God was asking us to take up the baton.

This project is a partnership with the Zion Assemblies of God Church in Bo.The school currently has over 300 pupils and provides schooling free of charge to the orphans in our care. The building is still incomplete but functional. We now have lockable doors and grills on the windows but without glass. The building is still not secure enough to leave anything inside apart from the benches seats and blackboards. We also still have to build a compound wall on 2 sides to complete its security.

We were able to bring out some educational posters, pencils, pens, crayons and notebooks. The nursery school still needs basic educational toys.

Winter 2007 trip to Sierra Leone

The main purpose of this trip was to build relationships with our key staff and the local 23 workers employed directly by FHMI in Bo and to assess the various departments.

  • Zion Primary School
  • Vocational Training for vulnerable women
  • Church Plants
  • Bible College
  • Village Outreach

Cynthia Kanu is our Head of Ministry Development and is supported by her husband Kelfala. Both are on the board of Fresh Hope Ministries International, Sierra Leone along with David and Barbara Craig. FHMI-SL is now a fully registered non-profit corporation in Sierra Leone, wholly owned by Fresh Hope Ministries International, a UK Charity based in Northern Ireland.

A secondary purpose was to look at how we can help the poor of 3 small villages that God had brought across our path a week or two before going out.

The team consisted of Andrea Peterson and Audrey Thompson, both Trustees, and David and Barbara Craig.

Overall, after 8 trips now since 2002 to Sierra Leone, if we had to use one word to sum up what we experienced on this trip it would be ‘overwhelming’. Our hearts overflowed with the love and compassion of Jesus for the lost, sick and hurting, especially for the remote villages. We have come to loathe the word ‘prioritize’ because someone somewhere will be missing out what we can do with the available resources.
